Yellowstone National Park is a magical place in winter. Mark Menlove, executive director with Winter Wildlands Alliance, will present a slide show and discussion on the history of winter use in Yellowstone National Park and current stewardship efforts to protect opportunities for winter visitors to enjoy natural quiet and the subtle sounds of erupting geysers and other wonders in the country's oldest national park. Winter Wildlands Alliance, an REI nonprofit partner headquartered in Boise, is a national organization working to promote and protect winter wildlands and a quality human-powered snowsports experience on public lands.

Sun, September 20, 2009 -"This is America" Preview

"This is America" is a 45-minute subset of "The National Parks; America's Best Idea" that details some of the "untold stories" uncovered in the ten years of research that led to the creation of the documentary — stories of diverse people making a difference in protecting specific park units. One of the people featured is Lancelot Jones, who once owned much of the Keys property now at the southern end of Biscayne National Park. The film will be screened at the North Regional - Broward College Library at 2:00 on Sunday, September 20. The screening will be followed by a discussion of the role of National Parks in modern society by Biscayne National Park ranger Gary Bremen.

Wed, September 23, 2009 -Feel Free: A National Parks Celebration in Central Park

“Feel Free: A National Parks Celebration in Central Park,” will feature highlights from Ken Burns’s new PBS documentary, “THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA,” and musical acts by an array of talented performers. The live show from East Meadow in Central Park will be shared via satellite to PBS affiliates and other partners assembled in various locations around the country. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to kickoff the evening and Department of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar will speak, along with other dignitaries.

Sun, September 27, 2009 -National Parks photo contest

WGCU is partnering with the local newspaper, The News-Press, for a National Parks photo contest. Readers will be invited to submit images from their travels to national Parks. International photographer Clyde Butcher, whose work appears in The National Parks film and is a Southwest Florida resident, will judge the contest. Winners will have their pictures published in the Sunday Tropicalia magazine section (circulation 94,628) on September 27 and will receive a prize package from WGCU.

Sat, November 7, 2009 -National Parks - Big Cypress family tour

WGCU will provide an educational and entertaining experience for local Hispanic children and their families. WGCU will host a pair of family field trips to Big Cypress National Preserve. The day’s activities will include a showing of the WGCU produced documentary and presentations by park staff. WGCU’s special guests will receive a picnic style lunch and a small take home gift. WGCU will provide a bilingual escort/guide for each trip.

Sat, October 31, 2009 -National Parks - Ding Darling familiy tour

WGCU‘s will provide an educational and entertaining experience for local Hispanic children and their families to the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Activities will include a showing of the WGCU produced documentary and presentations by park staff. WGCU’s special guests will receive a picnic style lunch and a guided tram ride with a bilingual naturalist. WGCU will provide a bilingual escort/guide for the trip.

Wed, September 16, 2009 -National Parks Preview Screenings

On September 16, WGCU is hosting a day of screenings of The National Parks preview. Attendees will see the preview DVD as well as clips from the locally produced documentaries. the screenings will be held at 10 a.m., noon, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The preview day will include information tables from ten of the region’s public spaces (parks and preserves), including the sites in the documentaries. The day is being promoted via our member magazine, on-air spots and local newspaper ads.

SDPB will host a free public preview film screening for "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" on Sunday, May 3 at the historic Elks Theatre in downtown Rapid City, SD. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. MT, the event will feature an opening prayer by a Lakota elder, and comments by Gerard Baker, Superintendent at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and Dayton Duncan, co-producer of the documentary series.

May 3rd from 1:00-4:30 p.m. MDT - Revealing Voices From the Past: The Art of Historical Writing

SDPB and the Wild Burro Writer's Group will be hosting a writer's workshop on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The workshop, held in Theater B from 1:00-4:30 p.m., will feature two presentations by locally and nationally-acclaimed writers. The first presenter will be Jace DeCory, an instructor of Indian Studies at Black Hills State University and an enrolled member of the Lakota tribe, who will speak about writing and oral histories. The second presenter will be Dayton Duncan, co-producer and writer of several documentaries by Ken Burns, including the upcoming series, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea." He will speak about the research and writing process he uses for non-fiction works and for film. Attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance. May 3rd 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. MT - Information Expo at Mount Rushmore

South Dakota Public Broadcasting and the six National Parks sites in our region will be joining with several multi-cultural groups to present an Information Expo on Sunday, May 3rd. Held at Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Carver's Cafe, with a panoramic view of the presidential carvings, the Information Expo will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mountain Time. From 1;00-2:30 p.m. you can meet Dayton Duncan, co-producer and writer of "The National Parks: America's Best Idea", the upcoming PBS documentary series by Ken Burns. Representatives from Mount Rushmore Ntional Memorial, Badlands National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Wind Cave National Park, Devil's Tower National Monument, and the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site will be on hand to meet the public. SDPB will host information about the documentary and will have a fun activity for the children, courtesy of PBS Kids! The Information Expo is a free event, but the Mount Rushmore parking fee applies.
